Critical Care
Often, patients who are recovering from serious illnesses or injuries, require additional critical care services for medically complex conditions such as trauma, infectious diseases, wound healing, cardiovascular disease, stroke, amputation, and ventilator weaning.
With a team of trained professionals and a full-time medical director on staff, Ernest Hospitals are specially trained to provide more intensive services to patients than what is provided in a normal acute hospital setting. The medical teams consist of physicians, nurses, therapists, specialists, pharmacists, and other highly trained medical professionals.
In Ernest Health hospitals, all patients receive 24-hour nursing and respiratory care services, with daily physician management. Hospitals feature all private rooms and well-equipped therapy areas, among other services that are individualized within each hospital to best meet each community’s needs. Some of these services may include ventilator weaning, amputation, or wound care programs.

Why Critical Care?
Most people who need inpatient hospital services are admitted to an “acute care” hospital for a relatively short amount of time. But some patients may be recovering from serious illnesses or injuries that require longer hospital stays. Critical care hospitals are certified as acute hospitals, but they focus on patients who – on average – need to stay in the hospital more than 25 days. For this reason, a critical care hospital is also sometimes called a long-term acute care hospital.
These patients are transferred from an acute hospital’s intensive or critical care units to critical care hospitals like those of Ernest Health. There, they can receive additional critical care services. Critical care facilities specialize in treating patients who may have more than one serious condition, but who may improve with time and care and return home.
